Who's Speaking?

Craig Schaaf (Seed Saving and Leather tanning for kids)

My family & I have Golden Rule Farm in Kaleva Michigan. We grow heirloom tomatoes & other vegetables for a restaurant in Traverse City. Over the years my experiences and training have been very eclectic. From the time I was 16 to 25 I was a professional fisherman. Age 17 fished on the United State’s Fishing Team. Age 23 taught fly casting & fly tying for Orvis. From 26 to 35 apprenticed as a finish carpenter and trimmed beautiful homes. From 36 to present which is 51. I have made my living growing vegetables for a restaurant in Traverse City along with doing consulting and seminars on gardening & farming.

You can always find someone that is more experienced or knowledgeable. I don’t claim to have everything figured out. That’s not the point. The point is to pass on what I have been able to learn over the years.

I hope you will receive a blessing from this avalanche of information! If the Lord gives me another 30 years I will just keep sharing what I continue to learn.

Mark Baker (Biochar)

Mark has made it his mission to inspire, educate, and empower anyone who wants to farm. He himself started homesteading in mid-life and experienced a steep learning curve with lots of “learning moments.” He has a vision of people being self-sufficient as food growers, including gardening, raising animals, and food preservation in sustainable and regenerative ways.  He firmly believes that the experience of farming and homesteading is available to anyone. The Anyone Can Farm Experience is your opportunity to learn how to homestead and farm, to experience food freedom and benefit from the experiences and wisdom of an experienced farmer.

Jill Baker (Cheese making)

Jill Baker, wife of Mark and co-operator of Baker’s Green Acres, brings a lifetime of farming experience to the table (literally).  She had the good fortune to grow up with gardening parents and farming grandparents. She’s raised many different animals through the years. As she and Mark have raised eight kids, including homeschooling them, she’s developed her vision for working with nature’s systems to keep the farm and family healthy, which includes food preservation and cooking what the homestead provides. She brings her perspective on farming, homesteading, and raising a farm family. Watch for kitchen how-to’s and healthy lifestyle training from her.

Joe Baker (the photos guy):

Raised on Baker’s Green Acres, he has returned to his roots and shares his perspective with you through video and pictures. He’s the storyteller who brings the wisdom of the homestead to life on the screen.  He’ll be taking the professional pictures of the event. When you sign in on arrival get him your textable number and you'll get all the photos he takes of  you through the day!

Crystal Brummans (Raising Goats)

At Hidden Creek Farm we believe in Heritage breeds, Heirloom produce and raising the healthiest foods possible for our community.  Everything here on our farm is raised with love and care until it is ready for harvest. We do this WITHOUT the use of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO's), pesticides, herbicides, chemicals, hormones, steroids, or antibiotics. In addition to all the above our livestock is also corn, soy and wheat free. We focus on raising our livestock with a pasture and produce based diet. We milk a small herd of goats on the farm that provide us, our customers and other animals with fresh milk. We feed our goats fermented alfalfa along with lots of fresh pasture greens and browse throughout the summer. In the winter months they get local organic hay and produce scraps.

Andrew Cross (Food Forest and Agroforestry)

Andrew is a horticultural consultant specializing in landscape design And building resilient systems. Andrew also has over 20 years of experience in integrated animal husbandry and Agricultural management.

Dave and Amanda Allen (How to Start a Homestead panelists)

David and Amanda are disabled Army veterans who began homesteading in 2015.  Each had established their own individual small homesteads before they combined them in 2017.  Since combining their homesteads, they have moved twice, establishing their homesteads from scratch each time, as well as increasing production and creating what is now known as Arrowhead Homestead.  This has given them the unfortunate education of being masters at starting a homestead from nothing.  Their current, and hopefully last, homestead is located in Northwest Indiana on 7 acres where they raise pastured chickens and turkeys, ducks, rabbits, and goats as well as a large garden for vegetables and fruit trees.  They are looking forward to expanding into maple syrup and pastured pigs in the near future.  Amanda, also owns and operates Bohica Soapworks, LLC on the homestead.  Bohica Soapworks creates artisan soap and bath products with the goat milk and herbs from the property.
