This article from the LA Times, Backyard Chickens on the Rise, highlights a front in the local food movement that we’ve discussed with my sister, who lives near Grand Rapids.  She told me this week of a gentleman down there who was told he had to get rid of his very small backyard flock and decided that the Right to Farm Act permitted him to keep his feathered pets, so he’s fighting the  order.  My sister and her husband have been working to be able to have a small backyard flock.  They want to have a small moveable pen and about 4 layers just for the summer.  Apparently this is sanctioned in other cities, but they are the first to ask in their township.   For those of you who live in towns this may be an interesting venture to consider.
